Craig Balding Field Notes is a collection of practical notes on technology, security, AI, finance, and modern digital life.

Many posts start as AI-assisted conversations about practical questions, tradeoffs, or decisions. I use this site to turn the durable parts into edited, searchable notes for others facing similar technical, operational, or strategic problems.

I’ve spent more than 30 years in technology and cybersecurity, including leadership roles at Barclays and GE. Today, I work independently from Budapest and London, advising organisations on cyber risk, AI security, and resilient systems.

This site is intentionally exploratory: not hot takes or constant publishing, but a useful archive of ideas, tradeoffs, and lessons learned over time.

While this site covers a broader range of technical and operational interests, my consulting work continues through Threatspotting, focused on Cyber Risk Advisory & Assurance, ISO 27001 for Tech Startups, and Cloud & AI Security.

What to expect

Posts here are irregular, but written to be useful. Some are short notes. Some are longer explanations. Most are written to clarify a practical question, decision, or tradeoff.
